Anil Kumble, India’s most successful bowler, was given a one-year term as head coach on Thursday 23rd June, 2016 with the country’s cricket board (BCCI) putting their faith in the 45-year-old despite his lack of coaching experience.
Total of 57 applications for the post of Coach of Team India were received which were put in the advisory panel which includes Sachin Tendulkar, Saurav Ganguly and VVS Laxman. All of them insisted for Anil Kumble for the post of Coach.
Kumble’s coaching experience is limited to being a mentor of Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers of Bengaluru in Indian Premier League but his Cricketing experience is very vast. He is the most successful Indian Bowler alongwith some good Batting knocks.
Anil Kumble was one of the most dedicated Indian Cricketer and he has proved this time and again. Whether it was the 10 wicket haul against Pakistan at Firoz Shah Kotla, Delhi (4th to 7th February, 1999) or bowling with a broken jaw against West Indies and claiming all important Brian Lara’s wicket in 2002, he always shown his dedication towards the game.
Kumble holds an excellent bowling record and he is the only Indian bowler to claim 10 wickets in an innings. His Career statistics speaks of his capabilities.
“It was very different because this was the first (job) interview that I was attending,” Kumble said. “My colleagues who I have played with throughout my career were on the other side of the table.
“It was very strange. It was quite nerve-racking.”, added Kumble.
“The focus will be on our overseas record,” Kumble told the board’s website (www.bcci.tv). “The mindset … I believe we need to start looking to address that from home itself.
“So when we sit down we will look to make a plan and ensure that we train towards achieving those goals.”
“It’s nice to have a camp in Bengaluru. We will sit down and iron out our plans and be ready for West Indies,” said the former leg-spinner, who took 619 wickets in 132 tests and 337 from 271 one-day internationals. Indian team will camp in Bengaluru before going to West Indies for the Four Match Test Series against West Indies.
“Getting 20 wickets in test cricket will win you matches and that will be the focus,” he said.
“I believe this team has the potential. It’s a young team and it’s driven by a young leader and it will be nice to work with Virat (Kohli).”
With all the potentials of Kumble, we wish him and Team India All the Best for the upcoming series.
