A Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student and an activist of the All India Students’ Association, has been arrested for allegedly drugging and raping a 28-year-old research scholar at his university hostel room on Saturday.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police-I (South) Nupur Prasad said that on Sunday, the victim approached the police and registered a complaint that she had been raped by one Anmol Ratan, a student of JNU and an AISA activist. The victim is in the first year of her Ph.D.

According to Ms Prasad, the accused had taken the victim to his room on the pretext of giving her a movie CD. There he gave her a drink mixed with some drugs and assaulted her. Ms. Prasad added that after the assault the accused had refused to let the victim leave. The accused had also threatened the victim with consequences if she revealed the incident to anyone, specially University Administration or Police.

However, the next day the victim approached the Police Station and reported the incident to the police . “On the basis of statement of complainant, a case under sections 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered and further investigation is in progress,” said Ms. Prasad.
