The Indian Premier League (IPL) is undoubtedly the most popular format of cricket that fans enjoy. Be it the swift and short innings or the high-stakes bid game, it has been a rage since its inception and continues to be a favourite. However, with the Coronavirus pandemic wreaking havoc in the second wave, the league was halted this year. Not just because India was registering surges in COVID-19 cases but because as many four players had tested positive. After Kolkata Knight Riders players Varun Chakravarthy and Sandeep Warrier’s diagnosis that postponed the KKR vs RCB clash, Delhi Capitals’ Amit Mishra and Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Wriddhiman Saha also came out with a positive report.
Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had stated, “The BCCI does not want to compromise on the safety of the players, support staff and the other participants involved in organising the IPL. This decision was taken keeping the safety, health and wellbeing of all the stakeholders in mind. These are difficult times, especially in India and while we have tried to bring in some positivity and cheer, however, it is imperative that the tournament is now suspended and everyone goes back to their families and loved ones in these trying times,” it added.

But as it turns out, the league is back on! No, it is not resuming in India; instead the remaining matches of the 2021 season will be held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) soon according to the BCCI. It is moving outside considering the ‘monsoon season’ is upon us in India. Reportedly, the decision was taken at a Special General Meeting (SGM) held virtually, where members unanimously agreed to resume the IPL. There are 31 matches that are yet to be played in IPL 2021 and they will likely take place between September 18 and October 10.
