Unexpectedly, Novak Djokovic has retired from the 2025 Australian Open semi-finals due to injury after losing the first set 7-6(5) against Zverev. Djokovic was aiming for an 11th Australian Open title but left leg pain prevented that. The men’s final takes place on Sunday, 26th January. He gave the crowd the thumbs up as he walked to the locker room, while the audience booed at him. Zverev the German tennis player is a two-time runner-up at other major tournaments has advanced to his first Australian Open final and will face the winner of Friday’s second semifinal between No. 1 defending champion Jannik Sinner of Italy and No. 21 Ben Shelton from the United States.

Djokovic, with expectations, was vying for his 11th Australian Open crown and a record 25th Grand Slam, injured his left leg during his quarterfinal win over Carlos Alcaraz. The 37-year-old’s upper left leg was severely wrapped after damaging it in the quarterfinals.
Djokovic and Zverev have played 12 matches before, with the Serb winning eight of them, including their most recent meeting at the 2023 Cincinnati Open.Zverev, who had battled to recapture his best form over two injury-plagued seasons, showed hints of his old self last year, winning Masters 1000 championships in Rome and Paris and coming second at the French Open.

“There is a possibility. Who knows,” Djokovic mentioned when asked if he could have played on the Melbourne Park courts for the final time. “I’ll have to see how the season unfolds. I want to continue. But I’m uncertain if I will have a modified schedule for the upcoming year. I typically enjoy coming to Australia to compete. I’ve achieved the greatest success in my career here. So, if I’m fit, healthy, and motivated, I don’t see any reason why I wouldn’t come,” he continued. “But there’s always a possibility, indeed.”
