Two Iranian teenagers get punished with 99 Lashes

In Tehran, Iran, two Iranian teenage girls faced potential punishment after posting a reel of themselves dancing on Instagram.  It is noticed that the reel was filmed in front of the Monument to the Unknown Martyrs, showcasing themselves dancing in jeans and knitted jumpers, but Iranian authorities have called their attire ‘indecent’.  The practice of behavior that is appropriate for a human being court is treated by the morality police in Iran as an act of arrest and therefore there is a high possibility of imprisonment.

This incident is indicative of Iran’s restrictive laws on public behavior, especially regarding women’s conduct, including their dress and actions in public. Article 637 of Iran’s Penal Code considers dancing in a public place a crime, incurring punishment of up to 99 lashes. The arrests of teenage girls are part of a larger crackdown to suppress social media activities and public expressions of defiance against Iran’s morality laws and regulations. This occurs amid growing resistance to such rules, particularly following the 2022 protests triggered by the death of Mahsa Amini.

Amini, a young woman died in the custody of the morality police for allegedly violating hijab laws, sparking widespread demonstrations that underscored public discontent with the government’s restrictive policies targeting women and their rights.

The government has recently proposed even stricter dress and behavior laws, with harsher penalties for violations, including longer prison terms and social media bans. This case exemplifies the ongoing conflict between individual freedom of expression and the government’s attempts to enforce its moral code in Iran.
