Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis Links Nagpur Violence to Blockbuster Film Chhaava
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has sparked controversy by attributing the recent unrest in Nagpur to the success of Chhaava, a historical epic depicting the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. The film, starring Vicky Kaushal, chronicles the Maratha leader’s resistance against the Mughal empire and his brutal execution at the hands of Aurangzeb.
Violence Erupts in Nagpur Over Aurangzeb’s Legacy
Addressing the Maharashtra Assembly on March 18, 2025, Fadnavis suggested that the movie had reignited deep-seated anger against Aurangzeb, fueling tensions that led to violent clashes in Nagpur’s Mahal area. The unrest began after a protest by right-wing groups demanding the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb escalated into chaos. Protesters and counter-protesters clashed, resulting in stone-pelting, property damage, and injuries to over 33 police personnel.
Authorities were quick to intervene, imposing Section 144 in sensitive areas to curb further violence. Meanwhile, CM Fadnavis labeled the riots as “pre-planned,” pointing to the discovery of trolleys loaded with stones at the protest site. He urged citizens to maintain peace and avoid being swayed by inflammatory narratives.

A Film That Revived History or Sparked Unrest?
Chhaava has been a massive box office success, grossing over ₹565 crore. Its portrayal of historical events has struck a chord with audiences, drawing praise for its storytelling and performances. However, its depiction of Aurangzeb’s rule has also ignited debates, with some claiming the film has inflamed communal tensions.
Critics argue that the movie’s impact goes beyond historical awareness, potentially shaping public sentiment in ways that lead to real-world consequences. On the other hand, supporters contend that Chhaava simply presents historical facts and should not be held responsible for how audiences react.
Government’s Stance and Public Response
In light of the violence, the Maharashtra government has deployed additional security forces in volatile regions and has called for strict action against those responsible for inciting unrest. Discussions are ongoing regarding the influence of historical films on contemporary socio-political dynamics.
As the debate over Chhaava continues, the incident raises important questions: Should films portraying history be held accountable for public reactions? Or is it society’s responsibility to engage with history thoughtfully, without allowing past conflicts to shape present-day relations?
