Guillain-Barré Syndrome Outbreak: Maharashtra and West Bengal Report Rising Cases
Mumbai/Kolkata, January 30, 2025: A sudden surge in Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) cases has raised concerns in Maharashtra and West Bengal, with multiple suspected deaths linked to the rare neurological disorder.
Maharashtra Reports 127 Cases, Two Deaths
Maharashtra has reported 127 suspected GBS cases, with two confirmed fatalities. The outbreak has been primarily concentrated in and around Pune, prompting state health officials to investigate potential causes. Contaminated water sources are being examined as a possible contributing factor.
The Maharashtra health department has activated a Rapid Response Team (RRT) to assess the situation and provide medical assistance. Public health advisories have been issued, urging residents to maintain hygiene and seek immediate medical attention if symptoms such as weakness, tingling sensations, or difficulty in movement arise.
West Bengal Reports Pediatric Cases and Two Deaths
In West Bengal, two children from North 24 Parganas have reportedly succumbed to GBS while undergoing treatment in Kolkata hospitals. Several other pediatric patients remain hospitalized, but health experts maintain that the frequency of GBS cases remains within annual averages, dismissing fears of an outbreak.
Dr. Sayan Bhattacharya, a neurologist at a leading Kolkata hospital, stated, “GBS is a post-infective disorder, often triggered by viral or bacterial infections. While there is no major spike in cases, parents should be vigilant about early symptoms.”
Health Authorities on High Alert
Authorities in both states are closely monitoring the situation, with hospitals equipped to handle potential cases. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is also analyzing data to understand any emerging patterns or underlying causes of the sudden rise in cases.
Citizens are advised to take precautions, including drinking boiled water, practicing good hygiene, and consulting healthcare providers for any unusual neurological symptoms.
What is Guillain-Barré Syndrome?
GBS is a rare autoimmune disorder where the body’s immune system attacks the peripheral nerves, leading to muscle weakness and, in severe cases, paralysis. While most patients recover with proper treatment, early diagnosis is crucial to prevent complications.
