48th International Kolkata Book Fair Begins Without Bangladesh Participation
On Tuesday, January 28th, 2025, the much-anticipated 48th International Kolkata Book Fair commenced with grandeur at the Boi Mela Prangan, Karunamoyee, Saltlake Central Park Fairgrounds. The book fair is held from 28 January to 9 February. Timing for the event is from 12 noon to 8 pm except for the last day which will extend till 9 pm.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee inaugurated the 48th International Kolkata Book Fair at Boi Mela Prangan, Salt Lake, with German dignitaries in attendance. The event with Germany as this year’s theme country, promises a vibrant celebration of literature, culture, and global connections.
However, this year’s edition is marked by the conspicuous absence of Bangladeshi publishers and participants, a first in the event’s long history. The deep cultural and linguistic ties between West Bengal and Bangladesh have traditionally been reflected in Bangladesh’s strong presence at the Kolkata Book Fair. Their absence this year is keenly felt, leaving a noticeable gap where their popular stalls showcasing books, literature, and art once stood. The reasons for their non-participation are unknown.
The Publishers and Booksellers Guild’s Kolkata Book Fair boasts a diverse vision of international publishers, with participation from countries like the UK, Spain, France, and Italy, along with a strong contingent of Indian publishers. This year, Italy takes center stage as the theme country, offering visitors a taste of Italian literature, art, and culture.
The Kolkata Book Fair at Boi Mela Prangan is the center of attraction for book enthusiasts, authors, and publishers from around the globe known for its world’s largest non-trade book fair and a major cultural event. Despite the absence of Bangladesh, the fair is expected to draw massive crowds and sustain its reputation as a celebration of literature and cultural exchange.
While offering a wide variety of books, seminars, and cultural programs, the Kolkata Book Fair’s attendees and organizers hope to see Bangladeshi participation return in future editions, restoring the event to its full vibrancy.
