Sanjay Roy, the prime suspect was convicted for the August 9 rape and murder of a post-graduate trainee doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, guilty under three sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The lawyers stated that the quantum of punishment will be announced on Monday.

Penalty charges on Sanjoy Roy: On Monday, the sentencing hearing will be held. Sessions Judge Anirban Das stated that the death penalty would be the maximum punishment and life in prison would be the minimum.

At 2:30 pm on Saturday, January 18, the Sealdah Civil and Criminal Court in Kolkata rendered its decision in the RG Kar rape and murder case.
Roy was found guilty under sections 66 (rape), 64 (causing injury resulting in death), and 103 (1) (murder) of the BNS, according to Partha Sarathi Dutta, the attorney for the Central Bureau of Investigation, which conducted the investigation.
Sanjoy Roy, a former Kolkata Police civic volunteer and the main accused was trialed every day (excluded holidays) at Sealdah court for two months. The judge examined 51 witnesses.

CBI framed charges against him on October 4.

In early January, the victim’s parents filed a petition with the Supreme Court, demanding that other suspects in the crime be prosecuted. They claimed that their daughter was the victim of a larger conspiracy.

The CBI has still yet to file charges against Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, and Abhijit Mondal, the former officer-in-charge of the local Tala police station, despite the fact that both were arrested and charged with evidence tampering.

Ghosh is under investigation in a separate case involving financial corruption at the hospital.

When the trial concluded, the victim’s father claimed that the CBI followed in the footsteps of the Kolkata police, who also claimed that Roy committed the crime.

“We wanted Roy to be punished, but it was not possible.
The DNA tests (conducted by the CBI) revealed the presence of four other people at the crime scene,” the victim’s father stated on Saturday, prior to the verdict being announced.
